BRA, BIKINI OR BREAST CARRIER?

CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT TALKING ABOUT THE YOUNG AND THE ELDERLY IN MINAS GERAIS

Abstract

How do young and old refer to the item of clothing that women wear to hold their breasts? Is the way to name this piece today the same as it used to be? For the purpose of seeking answers to such questions, the present work aims to perform a semantic-lexical study based on the data found in the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil Project (ALiB). A discussion will be presented around question 188 of the ALiB questionnaire regarding clothing and accessories items: "What is the name of the garment that serves to hold the breasts?" (NATIONAL COMMITTEE, 2001, p.37). Following the guidelines of the ALiB Project, based, in turn, on the methodology of Multidimensional Geolinguistic research, Following the guidelines of the ALiB Project, based, in turn, on the methodology of Multidimensional Geolinguistic research, quantitative and qualitative analyses of the answers given by informants in age groups I and II were performed, of the male and female sexes, with elementary schooling. The interviewees are natural residents of the localities of Ipatinga, Passos, Formiga, Ouro Preto, Viçosa, Lavras, São João del Rei, Muriaé, Poços de Caldas, Juiz de Fora and Itajubá, belonging to the state of Minas Gerais. Moreover, at first, this research has as its theoretical foundation the work of Paim (2014; 2019), as well as online dictionaries of Portuguese language: Caldas Aulete and Michaelis. Thus, the variants bra, bikini, and breast-holder (the oldest) were found.
