“La vida secreta de los niños"
Multimodal language and joint attention in child-child and child-adult interaction

In linguistic exchanges, when considered as a form of human interaction, we have as a basis an articulated set of communication that involves the interaction between verbal production and the use of gestures, including, in this case, body expressions and facial expressions in different contexts (Ávila-Nóbrega; Cavalcante, 2015). This articulated set, from McNeill's perspective (1985), composes a multimodal matrix that considers gesture, speech and their nuances as factors belonging to an inseparable multimodal matrix in language. In the process of language acquisition, the incidence of some gestures by children can also occur due to symmetry in the context of communication between their peers (children) or due to asymmetry in communication mediated by adults. In this sense, this study has as its general objective to describe, within the scope of multimodality, the symmetrical (child-child) and asymmetrical (adult-child) interaction based on excerpts from the Spanish television program La vida secreta de los niños. Therefore, we justify that the present investigation can contribute to research and discussions about language and semiotic elements, specifically with studies that consider language acquisition from multimodal elements, in the context of the gesture-speech matrix.
